About the Historic Granary Building
Cecelia Blackburn sold the land for this building to the Central Milling Co. of San Jose in 1889. The Granary was built in 1890 and sold to the Sperry Milling Co. in 1891 and was used for flour production and storage. A steam generator provided power to the mill and served as the first electric power plant in Paso Robles.
In 1924, Ray Pelton converted the building to bulk grain storage. It was partitioned into 27 bins, 12' x 12' x 30 feet. On the top floor, was a hopper scale that weighed and then distributed the grain throughout the building for later shipment. The Ernst Brothers operated the Granary from 1949 to 1984.
In 1992, Newlin Hastings extensively remodeled the building. The interior and the roof were removed until only the 12' x 12' redwood beam remained. From the skeleton emerged the building you see today that includes a major restaurant, retail shops, and offices. Stairs and elevators were added to the north and south entrances. This impressive building is one of Paso Robles' historic landmarks.
